The Forge is a beautiful, tranquil 17th century chartreuse set in a 184 acre estate in the heart of the Dordogne, steeped in history, only 45 minutes from the nearest airport and it is now available for you to hire for a wonderful holiday, celebration or luxury break. It is considered locally to be the most important building of its kind in the whole of the Perigord region and nestles in a wooded valley with extensive gardens, stunning views, a swimming pool and a lake. The Forge has been returned to its former glory and is the perfect venue for parties of up to 20 people. Perhaps you want to explore this fabulous corner of France, simply relax and unwind in true luxury, or celebrate a special occasion with family and friends?
Accommodation
Accommodation at The Forge is across two buildings, conveniently located in close proximity to each other. The Main House has six ensuite bedrooms and The Barn has four ensuite bedrooms. Many of the bathrooms with luxurious Villeroy and Boch fittings and some have underfloor heating. Both properties have their own kitchen and dining facilities and each has a ground floor bedroom. All bedrooms are named after plants which grow on the estate. Interior design by Agnes Tynan.
The property is let exclusively to one group at a time, so you are only ever sharing the facilities with members of your own party.
The Forge has the benefit of 184 acres waiting to be explored! The River Manaurie runs through the centre of the magnificent gardens. Across the little wooden footbridge is a pergola, draped in wisteria, containing another outside dining area with barbecue. Beyond the pergola is a large heated swimming pool, with Pool House and sunbathing area. All bookings run from Saturday to Saturday and are on a self-catering basis although we will be happy to arrange a continental breakfast and to book a chef for lunch and dinner.

The Forge is looked after by our Estate Managers who live on site throughout the year and are ready to assist and answer your questions before and after you’ve made your reservation. If you would like extra housekeeping during the week, please contact our managers for details.
They will be delighted to help you plan your visit and can help organise any requests you might have - for example restaurant recommendations/bookings, cycle hire, yoga/pilates sessions, massage, wine tasting etc.
If you would like to ‘eat at home’ during your stay and would prefer not to cook yourselves, several local chefs have been highly praised by past guests and the Estate Managers can make bookings on your behalf.
We strongly recommend you consider placing your booking requests well in advance as these services do get busy throughout the season. On your first evening, and after you have settled in, the Estate Managers will spend a little time with you to answer your questions, cover a few practical details and help you make the most of your stay.
History
Constructed during the reign of King Louis XIV, the 'Sun King'.
According to the archives of the region, this chartreuse dates back to around 1680 and was originally built as a gentleman's hunting lodge. Owned in 1701 by the Le Marquis de Fleurac, seigneur de Rouffignac, it became an ironmaster's workshop around 1730 producing huge iron cauldrons for sugar reduction in the French Caribbean and cannons for Napoléon's army.
The Lake abutting the Forge is a reservoir created to provide the ironworks with a reliable source of water. By the end of the 19th Century, La Forge had ceased to manufacture iron.
The Forge is today considered to be the most important building of it's kind in the whole of the Périgord region.
